Ovulation is the moment in each cycle when one of your ovaries releases a mature egg, ready to be fertilized. It usually happens about 14 days before your next period starts.
Once that egg is released, it only sticks around for about 12 to 24 hours. Sperm, on the other hand, can survive in the body for up to five days. That's why the days leading up to and including ovulation matter so much if you're trying to conceive—this stretch is often called your "fertile window."
